Batik
Sri Lanka is renowned for its tradition of Batik. This art form has found its home in the heart of
our island nation, reflecting its vibrant culture and deep-rooted history. Batik is a method of
fabric decoration, where wax resist techniques are used to create intricate patterns and vivid
colors on textiles.
The characteristics of batik design include various features, such as ornate geometric shapes,
intricate symbols, patterns, dots, nature designs, and more. Traditional batik design included
some form of dots or dotting with geometric patterns.
Now, not only is batik used as a material to clothe the human body, its uses also
include furnishing fabrics, heavy canvas wall hangings, tablecloths and household accessories.
Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting,
or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap.
